Reiki
is a gentle, hands-on healing method that originated in Japan. Through the flow of subtle energy, Reiki
promotes relaxation, can ease pain, and can reduce anxiety and stress. Many
people experience a warm, tingling sensation when receiving Reiki.
During
a Reiki session, the practitioner will gently place his or her hands on the
person’s body anywhere that's comfortable, often on the head, neck, shoulders,
mid-back or thighs. Sessions can last
anywhere from 10 minutes to 45 minutes.
Although
it started in the East, Reiki is now being integrated into Western medicine as
a complementary technique. It’s being
used to help cancer patients, hospice patients, and is even being utilized in
places like Columbia University Medical Center.
